RESUMO

The thermal conductivity of superlattice films is generally anisotropic and should be studied separately in the in-plane and cross-plane directions of the films. However, previous works have mostly focused on the cross-plane thermal conductivity because the electrons and phonons in the cross-plane direction of superlattice films may result in much stronger interface scattering than that in the in-plane direction. Nevertheless, it is highly desirable to perform systematic studies on the effect of interface formation in semiconducting superlattice films on both in-plane and cross-plane thermal conductivities. In this study, we determine both the in-plane and cross-plane thermal conductivities of Al2O3 (AO)/ZnO superlattice films grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on SiO2/Si substrates in the temperature range of 50-300 K by the four-point-probe 3-ω method. Our experimental results indicate that the formation of an atomic AO layer (0.82 nm) significantly contributes to the decrease of the cross-plane thermal conductivity of the AO/ZnO superlattice films compared with that of AO/ZnO thin films. The cross-plane thermal conductivity (0.26-0.63 W m-1 K-1 of the AO/ZnO superlattice films (with an AO layer of ∼0.82 nm thickness) is approximately ∼150%-370% less than the in-plane thermal conductivity (0.96-1.19 W m-1 K-1) of the corresponding film, implying significant anisotropy. This indicates that the suppression of the cross-plane thermal conductivity is mainly attributed to the superlattice, rather than the nanograin columnar structure in the films. In addition, we theoretically analyzed strong anisotropic behavior of the in-plane and cross-plane thermal conductivities of the AO/ZnO superlattice films in terms of temperature dependence.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to select prescriptions (mixtures of medicinal herbs) used in the treatment of bone and joint disorders in Korean medicine, and through the analysis of medicinal herb combination frequencies, select a high-frequency medicinal herb combination group for further experimental and clinical research. METHODS: We systematically searched for terms related to bone and joint disorder in the "Dongeuibogam (Dong yibaojian)", a seminal Korean medicine book. We reviewed the results of published papers regarding the effects in bone and joint disorders (especially in osteoporosis, osteomalacia, osteopenia, rheumatoid arthritis, and degenerative arthritis). RESULTS: In total, 34 candidates of a medicinal herb combination for the treatment of bone and joint disorders(CMHCTBJDs) and nine candidates of a medicinal herb for the treatment of bone and joint disorders(CMHTBJDs) were selected. CONCLUSION: : The candidates of a medicinal herb combination for the treatment of bone and joint disorders (CMHCTBJDs) and candidates of a medicinal herb for the treatment of bone and joint disorders(CMHTBJDs) proposed in this study can be useful material for text mining to develop natural products with the effects in BJDs and also it has the potential to reduce the experimental and developmental time period.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To encourage healthier food choices for children in fast-food restaurants, many initiatives have been proposed. This study aimed to examine the effect of disclosing nutritional information on parents' meal choices for their children at fast-food restaurants in South Korea. SUBJECTS/METHODS: An online experimental survey using a menu board was conducted with 242 parents of children aged 2-12 years who dined with them at fast-food restaurants at least once a month. Participants were classified into two groups: the low-calorie group (n = 41) who chose at least one of the lowest calorie meals in each menu category, and the high-calorie group (n = 201) who did not. The attributes including perceived empowerment, use of provided nutritional information, and perceived difficulties were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The low-calorie group perceived significantly higher empowerment with the nutritional information provided than did the high-calorie group (P = 0.020). Additionally, the low-calorie group was more interested in nutrition labeling (P < 0.001) and considered the nutritional value of menus when selecting restaurants for their children more than did the high-calorie group (P = 0.017). The low-calorie group used the nutritional information provided when choosing meals for their children significantly more than did the high-calorie group (P < 0.001), but the high-calorie group had greater difficulty using the nutritional information provided (P = 0.012). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that improving the empowerment of parents using nutritional information could be a strategy for promoting healthier parental food choices for their children at fast-food restaurants.

This study compares the differences in proteomes expressed in tuberous roots of a light orange-fleshed sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. cultivar Yulmi) and a purple-fleshed sweetpotato cultivar (Shinjami). More than 370 protein spots were reproducibly detected by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, in which 35 spots were up-regulated (Yulmi vs. Shinjami) or uniquely expressed (only Yulmi or Shinjami) in either of the two cultivars. Of these 35 protein spots, 23 were expressed in Yulmi and 12 were expressed in Shinjami. These protein spots were analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Fifteen proteins in Yulmi and eight proteins in Shinjami were identified from the up-regulated (Yulmi vs. Shinjami) or uniquely expressed (only Yulmi or Shinjami) proteins, respectively. In Yulmi, α-amylase and isomerase precursor-like protein were uniquely expressed or up-regulated and activities of α-amylase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, and dehydroascorbate reductase were higher than in Shinjami. In Shinjami, peroxidase precursor and aldo-keto reductase were uniquely expressed or up-regulated and peroxidase and aldo-keto reductase activities were higher than in Yulmi. PSG-RGH7 uniquely expressed only in Shinjami and the cultivar was evaluated more resistant than Yulmi against the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita (Kofold and White, 1919) Chitwood 1949 on the basis of shoot and root growth. Egg mass formation was 14.9-fold less in Shinjami than in Yulmi. These results provide important clues that can provide a foundation for sweetpotato proteomics and lead to the characterization of the physiological function of differentially expressed proteins.

Researches on Augmented Reality (AR) have recently received attention. With these, the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) market has started to be active and there are numerous efforts to apply this to real life in all sectors of society. To date, the M2M market has applied the existing marker-based AR technology in entertainment, business and other industries. With the existing marker-based AR technology, a designated object can only be loaded on the screen from one marker and a marker has to be added to load on the screen the same object again. This situation creates a problem where the relevant marker'should be extracted and printed in screen so that loading of the multiple objects is enabled. However, since the distance between markers will not be measured in the process of detecting and copying markers, the markers can be overlapped and thus the objects would not be augmented. To solve this problem, a circle having the longest radius needs to be created from a focal point of a marker to be copied, so that no object is copied within the confines of the circle. In this paper, software-based sensing technology for multiple object detection and loading using PPHT has been developed and overlapping marker control according to multiple object control has been studied using the Bresenham and Mean Shift algorithms.

Soluble oligomers of human islet amyloid polypeptide (h-IAPP) are implicated in the initiation of beta-cell apoptosis leading to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Cleavage of the h-IAPP included in an oligomer may provide a novel method for reducing the level of h-IAPP oligomers, offering a new therapeutic option for T2DM. From the combinatorial library of triazine derivatives prepared by exploiting the Co(III) complex of cyclen as the cleavage center for peptide bonds, eight compounds were selected as cleavage agents for oligomers of h-IAPP. After reaction with cleavage agents for 36 h at 37 degrees C and pH 7.50, up to 20 mol% of h-IAPP (initial concentration: 4.0 microM) was cleaved, although the target oligomers existed as transient species. Considerable activity was manifested at agent concentrations as low as 100 nM.

RESUMO

We describe a 51-year-old man with a 3-year history of multiple system atrophy, who developed a reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS) after receiving prescription midodrine for therapeutic treatment of orthostatic hypotension. Typical reversible magnetic resonance imaging findings, following treatment with midodrine, suggested a possible relationship between midodrine treatment, supine hypertension, and RPLS, although a cause-and-effect relationship cannot be confirmed.
